According to their stocklist Ruinemans has gunawani in stock! I have no idea if they’re the real deal, but if so, that’s a great chance to save the projects population.
Big chance your LFS orders from Ruinemans, so if you’re in search of a new species: gget yourelf some!
February 14, 2014 at 11:30 am #6192Michael KotzullaParticipantSounds interesting – and maybe worth a try.
But: How can one order fish from Ruinemans withiout being a commercial retailer?
Do I have to ask my local dealer to order for me?February 14, 2014 at 12:51 pm #6193Peter FinkeParticipantIf this information is correct, Bartian, this will be of major interest to all Paro-friends in Europe! Hitherto, we had no clear commercial import of gunawani or spec. Danau Rasau before. Only two private imports, but with very limited numbers and the last without any females.
I think it is possible that the information of Ruinemans is correct, but I beg you, dear Bartian, try to receive more information about the origin of the fish: Are they really coming from Sumatra, county Jambi? Even then, there are some other forms which have been more often imported, and they are similar! Nevertheless, adult gunawani are to be recognized by their stout bodies and the colourful small bandings of the male fins.
Some photos would be great.
Anyway, it is likely that such imports do occur by several companies and in several European countries nearly at the same time, so maybe Glaser in Germany has got he fish, too.
We all should be highly interested since the species is otherwise lost at the moment in the project. Therefore, we should get hold of a bunch of pairs and have only one aim: to breed them. I did that once with animals that I got from Horst Linke’s private import, and it was not very difficult. They are niot as easy als e.g. linkei, but not as difficult as e.g. ornaticauda.
Praise to you, Bartian, for keeping your eyes open!!
February 14, 2014 at 1:00 pm #6194Michael KotzullaParticipantJust got some info from Ruinemans (see iscreenshot below): They are quite sure to have about 100 pcs. of P. gunawani.
Addition: Mr. de Goey from Ruinemans just stated that the fish came from Sumatra. Unfortunately, he did not confirm Jambi county…
February 14, 2014 at 2:31 pm #6196bartianParticipantGood job, Kotzulla!
Not to slate Ruinemans, but I’m sure they won’t see the difference between bintan and gunawani. I have quite some experience with Ruinemans, and they just sell fish with the name the exporter gives them. It could as well be a pack of Orinoco dolphins, and they would still say they’re sure it’s gunawani. In a seller’s tank, even an expert would not be 100% sure about a paro’s species.
@Peter Finke
When I bought my sumatranus a few days ago, I saw some very stout-bodied bintan-like fish, with much shorter, rounder fins and a different colouration. Does that match with gunawani‘s appearance? If that’s the case, Ruinemans’ fish could well be the real gunawani!February 15, 2014 at 11:26 am #6205Stefanie RickParticipantThat’s rather exciting news!
I know that my local fish dealer generally doesn’t order from Ruinemans and will not do it as a favour. So – is there any other way to get some of the fish? I have absolutely no experience with wholesalers …….. Is there any chance that e.g., Tropicwater will get some of the fish so that an order for me as private person would be possible? Or is there a chance that a member of the project gets his hands on a good lot of the fish and is able to distribute them here in Germany?
(I am interested in any paro species – but gunawani has been one of my favourites from the beginning. And it would be interesting to compare true gunawani females to my “mystery girls” which might resemble this species)
February 15, 2014 at 3:02 pm #6207Peter FinkeParticipantStefanie, try Tropicwater. The patron, Wolfgang Löll, was very helpful in other cases. But he was disappointed in the last case, too: Somebody identified a bunch a about 600 Paros imported by Glaser as the true deissneri, it would have been the first commercial import of that famous and magnificent fish, and Mr. Löll bought them all.
Then it became clear that it wasn’t deissneri; in fact, it was the new and hitherto unknow spec. Ampah. Not bad either, but diappointing nevertheless. I am not sure whether he sold all of them. We made it popular, the fish were excellent, but it was a flaw nevertheless. So, I am not quite clear if Mr. Löll is again ready to help in such a Paro-case, but I hope so. He is a fine chap. If it would be clear it’s gunawani he would readily do so. But in the situation like this – maybe or maybe not – I am uncertain.
Nevertheless, try. In principle Tropicwater sells to private buyers, too, not only to shops or other dealers.
If you are successful: tell us. There might be many friends more that were ready to follow you.February 15, 2014 at 4:24 pm #6208Stefanie RickParticipantThank you, Peter.
I contacted him now. If he is willing to order some of the fish, I will post a new message here – as an information for those who are also interested in buying them.
February 17, 2014 at 12:11 pm #6210Michael KotzullaParticipantOn Saturday, I asked my local retailer whether he orders at Ruinemans at all. He confirmed that he does – and replied that he would try tio get some of the ominous Paros (I guess it will be eight to ten).
As soon as they have arrived in his tanks, I will try to go there and take some pictures.
Given my tank situation, I will not be able to permanently accomodate more than six – or maybe only four fish (if I can distinguish males from females). What do you think? Should I buy all fish ordered straightaway? Then I might have to distribute some of them to another Paro keeper.
Michael
February 17, 2014 at 4:43 pm #6211Stefanie RickParticipantFirst some photos – I think that might throw some light on which species it might be.
If I don’t hear something from Tropicwater you can count on me if you need someone to take some fish.February 17, 2014 at 8:12 pm #6212Peter FinkeParticipantDear Michael Kotzulla, don’t buy all before we know whether it’s really gunawani (or something else very interesting. It it still possible that the fish are some of the regularly imported bintan-variants. But to buy a few males and females would surely be a good idea.
Perhaps your dealer could acquire some more information oabout the fish’s origin (although this is difficult: the “last” origin” is not the real or first origin; but it is a hint that might be of some informative value.
February 18, 2014 at 11:55 pm #6213Stefanie RickParticipantUpdate: Wolfgang Löll of Tropicwater answered me today. He says he is always willing to support the paro friends but it’s not that easy for him to simply order a few fish. He states that he has to order minimum quantities and thus first has to check which additional fish might be of interest for him. And he is short of time – he can only see to my request about mid of March.
So I think Tropicwater is no option this time. I don’t think that Ruinemans still has the fish by mid of March ………
Michael – if the fish ordered by your dealer indeed are gunawani or even another interesting bintan-like form, I am willing to buy one or two pairs (if shipping is possible at an acceptable rate).
February 19, 2014 at 12:28 am #6214bartianParticipantWhichever way you’re trying: hurry, there are only 18 fish left at Ruinemans!
February 19, 2014 at 12:48 am #6215Stefanie RickParticipant
Whichever way you’re trying: hurry, there are only 18 fish left at Ruinemans!
Yes – I’ve seen it this afternoon ………… there were still 28 fish left then …………. I hope that Michael’s dealer has already ordered in the meantime …………….
February 19, 2014 at 2:12 am #6216Michael KotzullaParticipantMy local retailer informed me, that the fish (unfortunately, I don’t know yet how many exactly) arrived this afternoon. As I will not be able to visit the shop before Friday – or maybe even not before Saturday – he will keep them for me as long as necessary.
