Jonette StabbertParticipant
Update: The Dutch have an appropriate saying, which translates as “He made me happy with a dead sparrow”. Meaning: someone offers something that gets you all excited and happy and it turns out to be nothing.
The questions I asked in my email to the shop:
I see that you have Parasphromenus anjunganensisis for sale. I have some questions:
What is the delivery time? (It is unclear whether it is 2 days, weeks, or ?)
Do you send these fish by post?
Is it possible to order males and females (for purposes of breeding)?
At what pH are you keeping the fish (so that I can start off with the same pH and if necessary, slowly lower it)? I am a member of the Parasphromenus Project and therefore aware of how to care for these fish.
Do you expect to obtain other Parasphromenus types? Please inform me if you do.

I wrote this because they not only had the Parasphromenus anjunganensisis on offer, but also listed several other types that were currently not available. The first reply came from Frans Veldhuis, whom I assume is the owner of the business. He wrote:
This fish is rarely available, and then nearly always as wild capture. They’re difficult to keep due to the extreme water values. The males have colored fins, the females almost no color. Concerning orders, you can best contact our colleague Harry Scherpenzeel.

I forwarded my correspondence to Harry and received a pleasant note from him shortly thereafter, informing me it was his day off but I could contact him tomorrow afternoon with a reminder. He wrote that he could contact some suppliers to inquire if they had the fish, but didn’t think it would be easy.
—
—The only reason I had contacted the shop was because I believed they had the fish and were offering it on their site. I am not personally interested in pursuing this, but if anyone is interested, contact Harry. If I can help, let me know. I plan to call Armin Schaefer to find out what he has in stock. I am very frustrated at not yet having fish! 🙁 Perhaps he has more of a “beginner’s” Parasphromenus type for me. My next step is to find transportation to visit him.
Is there anyone in Holland who would like to go with me? (You need to do the driving. I’m in Amstelveen.) Or maybe someone else who has fish for me?
Jonette
Jonette StabbertParticipantHmmmmmf! I just received a reply referring me to one of their other employees. It looks like they very seldom have any Parosphromenus. Therefore, I don’t understand why they list it among their available stock! Well, I forwarded the correspondence to the other employee, just to see what he has to say. I will report back here.
JonetteJonette StabbertParticipantThank you, Arno. I am ordering an osmosis unit.

Jonette StabbertParticipantHello Andrzej,
I decided to email the shop, rather than write. That way, I’ll be sure of no misunderstandings when I get their reply. I asked a lot of questions.Stay tuned…
By the way, I know these fish are not usually recommended for people as their first Parosphromenus. I am very carefully setting up my aquarium and have read a great deal of info on keeping these fish. Would it be inadvisable for me to purchase them?
Jonette
Jonette StabbertParticipantHello Bill,
What a shame that you didn’t get any males. I’ve just contacted the shop with a number of questions, including whether they have males and females, and am awaiting a reply which I will share here.Jonette
Jonette StabbertParticipantI looked at their site today and see their info about keeping the fish has been corrected! 😀
Jonette StabbertParticipantThank you so much for your clear explanation, Peter. I appreciate you taking the time to write in so much detail.
It is enough of a challenge for me to set up and hopefully maintain a stable blackwater aquarium. 🙂 I will only use some floating plants.
There is so much to learn! I’m enjoying the process very much. 😀
Best wishes,
JonetteJonette StabbertParticipantThank you, Tigertim. I already have several Cryptocorynes, but they’re probably not the right kind. I’ll try to find out which ones are suitable.
Cheers,
JonetteJonette StabbertParticipantA new question: On the package from my Catappa leaves, it says to just place them in the aquarium and wait a couple of days for them to sink. This is what I have been doing, but now I read somewhere that people soak them first in boiling water. What is best? Can the dried leaves possibly contain snail or other eggs that will become activated?
Cheers,
JonetteJonette StabbertParticipantHaha, Dorothee. I cannot tolerate the heat. If it is 23 C, I get ill. My friend in Kuwait just emailed me that it was 54 C in the afternoon a few days ago! I would be boiled alive!
Cheers,
JonetteJonette StabbertParticipantHi Arno,
I know that.:) I’m going to use my three existing tanks (that are now fully planted) most likely as community tanks. In any case, not for Paro’s. I need to buy some more (small) tanks. In those, I plan to use some floating plants that are found in blackwater habitats.Thank you for the recommendation of the sponge filter. I will see if I can find it here, or something very similar.
Jonette StabbertParticipantHi Dorothee,
Oh, how awful! I hope you didn’t lose many fish!
I will look for either a strong wooden or metal frame and strong metal or solid wood shelves.
Cheers,
JonetteJonette StabbertParticipantAh, now I see what a sponge filter is. I keep reading about them, but didn’t know what they look like. Because the Paro’s like dim light, I have been wondering about the lighting. I know you can create shadow with floating plants, but the plants need light. If I want to have several small tanks next to each other, I need to think of a way to have the lighting, unless I purchase an individual tank light for each one (more expense).
Cheers,
JonetteJonette StabbertParticipantHello Arno. Hahaha! That is your living room AND your fish room? Wonderful! And you have given me an idea. I have a wooden shelving unit like your metal one that has been stored in my garden shed for years. I will see if I can use that! I feel less eccentric since being on this forum. 🙂 Any aquaria I have need to be covered and cat and dog proof. I am owned by five cats and a huge Leonberger dog.
Perhaps, if you have the time, you can explain to me how you have lighting (and if you have filters) in your tanks?
Cheers,
JonetteJonette StabbertParticipantThank you again, Dorothee. WOW! You have quite a set up in that room! I don’t have any available furniture for any new tanks to rest on, that’s why I asked. I keep thinking there must be some kind of special shelf unit available specifically intended for aquaria. If not, there is a “hole in the market”.
Since no one has answered me about the eichen extract brand, I’ll post that question elsewhere.
Cheers,
