You can find the following information:
On the top, you see the year and below the amount of “BREEDING PAIRS” (=ZP) for each species/form that has ever been reported. I alays looked at the number of adult animals and took the lower number (if report was 5male, 3female, I counted this as 3 Breeding Pairs) So if of one species/form there had only been 50 females reported, I did not count them nor did I count undeterminde or juvenile animals.
I decided to do it that way because it does not make sense to count animals that are either not able to reproduce or not fully grown. I wanted to get a comarable number that has a sort of an impact. Theoretically, with each of these pairs we could set up a tank that should be able to produce offspring. This means that breading pair has the potential to keep its species alife which is not given in single animals or monosex groups.
I tried to keep as close to the descriptions and differenciations of forms given in the census reports. The “ct” at the end of a species name indicates “commertial trade or commertial import”.
At the bottom end of the file, you find special and concluded information for each year. The “total ZP” indicates the total amount of breeding pairs reported per year. The second row is the amount of Species/forms that were reported. The next and probably pretty important number is the ratio (total pairs)/(species reportet) It gives the average number of breeding pairs per species that were present. The last (uncomplete) row shows the number of participants.
The coloration of the numbers in the table indicates the “safety” of a present “population”. I would consider anything below 6(red) breeding pairs of one form/species als rather endangered. If there are more than 20 pairs(dark green), we can be pretty sure that the species can be kept alife for quite some time. It should be rather unexpectable that these species will vanish within a short time.
Rafael EggliParticipantWell, I think this would not be this bad if they only gave correct information concerning foods, pH and EC. The fish wont die from a wrong naming but certainly will if kept in tap water als the lable on the picture seems to suggest.
Rafael EggliParticipantYes i thought so and I would have been very surprised if they had been from there… Where did you find them, though?
Rafael EggliParticipantHaha cool 😉
Was this picture tanken at UnterWasser?Rafael EggliParticipantHi everyone!
I’m really happy about my Paro tanks so far. Yey I write tanks because I now set up a second one for the offspring. I only found 5 about 15 mm long pups that already show colored bands at the end of the fins and some great behaviour. It seems that some of them are trying to keep a small territory.
Besides this, the three others are doing very well. I already had 2 more nests since I seperated the pups and it seems to me that the larvae of the first spawning are growing without being eaten. (Maybe the more proteins in nutrition from the black mosquito larvae lead to less “baby hunting”) The hot weather of the past days has been really good for the Larvae. I find tons of them in the tank I got in my garden.
All the best Rafael
Rafael EggliParticipantHello everyone,
I hope for you all to succeed in your attempt to breed this species! And I am positive that eventually, you will all get them to spawn.
I don’t know if you have already tryed something like that but I just had a really good experience:
I had my P.linkei male and female seperated in two tanks for something like ten days. The male had previously been less active in spawning and there had been some weeks without nests. I fed them with lots of black mosquito larvae. Today, I made them join again and what can I say? They are already display beautifully…I know, it’s a different story with phoenicurus but I thought why not give it a try if nothing else works?
Rafael EggliParticipantHi everyone,
I m back with an update about my project…
The young paros are doing well. When I feed Artemia, I see usually up to ten young fishes that already show some pigments. Actually, the fourth breds have left their cave today.
I also started some new food methods. Yesterday, I got tons of daphnia from a nearby pond. Sadly, the adults dont really seem to like them. On the other hand, I have put a handfull of dried grass in an enclosed basin. Today, I found several eggboats in it. Hopefully, they will hatch soon and serve as really good protein food….
Rafael EggliParticipantHi everyone,
I just found two larvae swimming freely!!
I will feed Microworms tomorrow…
Surprisingly, the Male is already caring for (I think two) new Nests. At least, there are bubblenests in two different caves…Rafael EggliParticipantHi everybody,
Yesterday, the larvae have hatched so now, the Nest is Full of little kommas.
So Now I am looking forwards to the coming weeks. Maybe I can take some of the offspring with me to the Conference.Rafael EggliParticipantAnother try with the video…
Rafael EggliParticipantHi everyone,
I m back with an extreamly happy update. When I came back from school today, I went straightly downstairs to have a look at the linkeis tank. I had been suspicious about seing sexy eyes in one of the females for some days but mostly thought it was something made up by my excited imagination.
Well… today, I found the first real bubble nest nicely put under a leave in the front of the tank. Even from the pictures taken with my digicam, and later very well under the microscope I could see some greyish embryos in the eggs.
I defenitely had to take some pictures though… And there we go:
Pic 4 is one egg at a magnification of 100x I think, the round structure on the left top is an eye.
Pic 5 is the same part at a higher magnificatipn (im not exactly sure but i think its 200x)
Besides this, I could record a video where you can see heartbeat and also few pigments.I am surprised to see this wide developed embryos since I usally saw such a development only after a few days. Do you think these eggs are older than say 24 hours?
How long will they take to hatch?Rafael EggliParticipantHi Bernd,
Well, I think that I am still the only Swiss paro Keeper. I Hope to find some others also because I have some nice betta coccina offspring that might need new keepers to take care of. I have some good Connection to lokal Shops who have Great options. I think I might find some further interested people…
Rafael EggliParticipantWell, at the moment, I feed micro worms and artemia naupliae. Besides this, I will get mayfly and other insect narvae from a nearby pond and I’ll try to get black misquito larvae in our garden…
Rafael EggliParticipantHi everyone,
Yesterday, I got the nem Male from Dorothee. This is defenitely a male. The behaviour of my Fish is really interesting. Aparently, one of the females has chosen her Romeo and seems to Show the sexy eyes… They already coose a cavelike hole under a Root wehre I suppose they will soon spawn.
The Male has a little scratch in his caudal fin, I think this might have happened during the transportation or while catching. However, i think he will be completely fine soon.
Rafael EggliParticipantHi everyone,
Thanks a lot, Dorothee for those pictures. It makes life way more easy to have a bunch of pictures that show the same sex compared with others. Usually, you only get one or two pics in which you dont find all the differenciation factors and characteristics…
