The only efficient medicine we know of is 2-amino-5-nitrothiazol, a yellow power, which was sold as “Hexa-Ex” (by Tetra) or Spirohexol (by JBL) in a pressed solid form. It it becomes brown (after a few months, if not stocked properly in a refrigirator), you can throw it away; it has become ineffective. Since one or two years however they sell it in liquid form which is better to apply, but it is inefficient against Oodinium. So, at present we have no efficient medicine against Oodinium.
The Spirohexol tablets are still available, though not produced anymore by JBL. Google helps you find distributors.
Aminonitrothiazol (or 2-amino-5-nitrothiazol) is also said to be the agent in “Amtra Medic 5”. I couldn’t check this because the website of Amtra is not available at the moment.
Stefanie RickParticipantHello, Michael,
that’s very sad ……….. Unfortunately, none of the experts of this forum seems to be online – no answer for the last 50 minutes.
So I hope my not so experienced advice is not totally wrong: To me it sounds like Oodinium. Peter Finke and Martin Hallmann in their new book give the advice to use Spirohexol (only tablets, no fluid) against Oodinium – although it’s a remedy against intestinal flagellates. I have tried it with my Badis, and it worked. It’s Spirohexol by the brand JBL. Hope I’m right with this advice.Addition: As far as I know a slow (!!) rise of the water temperature up to 30 °C is also recommended.
Stefanie RickParticipantMaybe you could post another photo, showing this stronger colouration?
Stefanie RickParticipantBartian, is this the one of the fish you recently bought which you mentioned today in the gunawani-thread? The stouter one with more rounded fins?
It is a pity that nobody looked at your pictures or answered your last post. It would be interesting what the experts think – of your sumatranus and of this unknown species/form.
Stefanie RickParticipant
Actually, I took all 18 in order to have more time to observe them and to decide which to keep.
My dealer is very easy going here: He will take any fish back that I cannot forward to you or keep myself.
So there’s no risk.
Ah – that’s good to hear. Then it’s quite good that you have all 18! We are patiently looking forward to see some pictures of relaxed fish ………..
Stefanie RickParticipantHm ……….. that’s a problem indeed – you said that you actually have not much aquarium space. Did you have to take all of them ’cause you ordered them? Or did you want to save probable gunawani for the paro friends and bought them in advance? (Which would be a very nice intention!). As I said before (see my PN) – I take up to four – but please – not only males! (I already have a tank with three lonely females ………….and I do not have room to spare, too)
It would be really great if you could show us some photos ……………..
Stefanie RickParticipant
@Cranes
Sounds like a spectacular view! It’s a pity they don’t come over the Netherlands… Only geese here, and never more than a few dozens.
Short OT: For all who aren’t so lucky to be able to watch the cranes on their way ……
(Turn on your speakers)Stefanie RickParticipant
B) Stefanie, I took the tank photos before catching (I was actually allowed to catch myself) – and of the six fish I bought theres only photos of the two of them.
It might well be the same in the shop foto and in the hometank or the one you mention might hide in the back of my tank
Ah – good …………… so we will wait for more photos of them all! 😉 Did you get females, too?
Stefanie RickParticipantStefanie RickParticipantThank you, Helene, for posting your photos – and thanks to Bartian and Peter Finke for giving their expertise.
Now let’s see what Michael brings – maybe we get some more photos. I have no expert’s eye for paros but I must confess I had my doubts about Helene’s fish being gunawani. For me they are too long and slender (while gunawani seems shorter in proportion and stout) – but I was not sure whether this might be due to their youth. There is one fish on Helene’s first photos – still in the tank of the fish store I think – which proportions imho seem to fit better to being gunawani. But I think this one’s not among the fish Helene bought.
Gunawani or not – as I have not one of the bintan-forms yet I will keep my promise and take a pair or two of the fish Michael gets. If he gets enough to share ….
(Peter – here in Bonn and surroundings the crane’s northward migration could be observed nearly every day of this week, too. Always makes my heart ache with joy to watch them…………….)
Stefanie RickParticipant
Whichever way you’re trying: hurry, there are only 18 fish left at Ruinemans!
Yes – I’ve seen it this afternoon ………… there were still 28 fish left then …………. I hope that Michael’s dealer has already ordered in the meantime …………….
Stefanie RickParticipantUpdate: Wolfgang Löll of Tropicwater answered me today. He says he is always willing to support the paro friends but it’s not that easy for him to simply order a few fish. He states that he has to order minimum quantities and thus first has to check which additional fish might be of interest for him. And he is short of time – he can only see to my request about mid of March.
So I think Tropicwater is no option this time. I don’t think that Ruinemans still has the fish by mid of March ………
Michael – if the fish ordered by your dealer indeed are gunawani or even another interesting bintan-like form, I am willing to buy one or two pairs (if shipping is possible at an acceptable rate).
Stefanie RickParticipantFirst some photos – I think that might throw some light on which species it might be.
If I don’t hear something from Tropicwater you can count on me if you need someone to take some fish.Stefanie RickParticipantJust caught my rubrimontis male in full courtship display. His behaviour indicated that the female couldn’t be far, somewhere behind or beneath him – but I didn’t see her until she backed away from out of the ground cover.
Stefanie RickParticipantThank you, Peter.
I contacted him now. If he is willing to order some of the fish, I will post a new message here – as an information for those who are also interested in buying them.
