its quite silly,

I had some trouble whit a protein layer on the water surface.
It can, and did, help to give the biologic filter a bacteria boost whit some filter material or substrate from another tank. I used akadama substrate from one of my planted tanks, what I should have realised is that it stabilizes the pH at 6.2-6.4 Great for planted community tanks, but not for black water aquariums. :silly:

The female wasn’t sharing his enthusiasm I think, as you can see on the pictures she didn’t change her dress.
I did not have the time to watch them for long, but bought some glass worm. maybe that will make her change her mind.

I also found out what was causing the pH to rise. so I’ll be able to lower it towards pH 4.

Peter, they are from commercial trade, Ruinemans is the wholesaler, they were sold as wild caught but no further specifications where provided.

the tank dimensions are 50cm x 25cm x 30 cm water level 20cm.
water has the colour of weak tea, but the camera filters that out:
automatic white balance:

white balance based on light above the tank:

lightning is strong for 3 hours every evening (55 watt PL), during the day there is only daylight, in the morning a little direct sunlight.

somehow the pH doesn’t stay as low as it should, after a water change pH is 5, a few days later is nearly 6…

it looks like a simple air driven sponge filter. should be OK for small tanks.

anaerobic filtration is of minor importance for freshwater aquariums. the amount of N2 that can be produced in a small filter is probably not significant.

in most fora its possible to create restricted categories to prevent the situation that the fish end up in the wrong hands.

and if you are offering fish it is not necessary to sell them to anyone who is interested. you can (and should) ask more information from the buyer before you decide to sell them (or not)
That water isn’t spilled, it is fed back to the water cycle. The water we use here has absolutely nothing to do with drought in Africa and other countries. Also, saying billions when there are only 7 billion people around sounds somewhat exaggerated.
1,1 billion people don’t have access to clean and safe drinking water. Drought is a different subject.

But I get your point, we should keep in mind the downside of whatever we do.

exactly!

@Jacob
, sulphuric acid is fine to, in small quantities neither will have harmful effects.

for every litre RO water is use in my Paroshpromenus tanks, two litres of clean water are spilled.
at the same time billions of people don’t have access to clean water.

phosphate is of major importance to the world food supply, and we are running out of it.
but also the use of phosphate causes environmental problems. so why is phosphoric acid better then peat?

there will always be a downside, whatever method you chose, the best we can do is keeping our resources and wastes as limited as possible.

I’ll go for a brown background behind the tank. just need to find the right colour.

companions make fish usually less shy, and some Sundadanio might look great in there, but no young…..

I cleaned up the ornaticauda tank al little, its still a big mess but it should reflect a peatswamp stream, so I think that’s ok… the water could use a little more colour…

the fish don’t like me near the tank, so no pics of them.

thanks Helene,

the white stuff is some kind of fungus that often grows on fresh wood in the aquarium. its usually disappears after a few weeks. I think it grows on the sugars remaining in the twigs, it is easy to remove during the weekly water change. (With a hose)

it was sold to me as a nagyi, lovely species and not that shy

I have edited your post, and put in the image. I think you needed to rename it (too long name or maybe problem is dropbox) Hope its working here. Beautiful picture – kind regards Helene, webmaster
